Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive drug testing using hair follicles in Oak Grove, Virginia. If you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our specialization is in hair analysis, and our centers nationwide are equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Hair samples can evaluate alcohol/ETG, drugs, or other specific needs.

Over the years, hair follicle testing has become an integral method for drug screening. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse counselors now favor this method over urine testing. Hair tests support drug-free work policies and are essential for those on probation. A significant advantage of hair tests is a longer detection window of up to 90 days. Unlike urine testing, which is best for recent drug use within 5 days, hair testing offers unmatched accuracy and integrity.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing stands as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can present an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is easy, the risk of tampering is low, and it is effortless to mail.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of around 200 hair strands (near the dimensions of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, an ideal sample size for analysis and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is missing, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. Head hair pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial input of a sample into the lab's system, ensuring the sample's seal and shipment were intact, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional information not captured by an automatic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid evaluation for drug usage. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples showing potential positive results in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If potential positivity is detected in the Screening phase, additional hair is sourced from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine, saliva), making hair drug testing the most challenging procedure to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with potential positive results are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides patterns of substance usage over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually have higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis concentrates on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
