Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing for drugs in Prince George, Virginia. If you're seeking a hair or alcohol test, we specialize in this field and have centers all over the Nation ready to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Various substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG or specific tests can be identified via hair analysis.

Drug testing now more often involves hair follicle analysis. This method is gaining popularity among employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, who choose it over traditional urine tests. Companies with strict drug-free policies, as well as courts and probation services, utilize this test. Its main advantage is detecting drug use over an extended period, up to 90 days, making cheating difficult due to an observed collection. However, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug consumption within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as an influential instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the fiber strands as hair grows. When extracted near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a three-month span for detecting substances like alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to acquire, relatively immune to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair might be used. When discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the laboratory procedure of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab's framework. This process incorporates verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical method for excluding drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive indication necessitates validation to be permissible legally. Samples suggesting positive results in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample indicates positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive indication from screening is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The whole lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to tamper with: It is very challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical data provision: It can exhibit a drug use pattern over an extended period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs generally become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result disparities: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Prince George, VA, hair follicle tests are preferred for their extensive detection period compared to urine tests. Longer detection offers a broader view of substance use, making them more reliable for comprehensive assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
