Body hair denotes all alternative hair types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result involves four critical phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial assimilation of a sample into the lab's system. This phase verifies that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any further data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial assessment for substance abuse. Although this method is a budget-friendly tactic to exclude drug consumption for the vast majority of samples, a positive result in Screening must be verified to ensure court admission. Samples that test preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate a conclusive confirmation.

Upon a sample testing preliminarily positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the specimen for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other practices (like urine or saliva), posing a challenge due to the intricacy of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.
