Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to resource in Arlington, Washington. If a hair-based drug or alcohol test is necessary, you can rely on our specialization in hair testing, with centers located throughout cities nationwide. For testing, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is typically required. Hair tests offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized options.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become part of the drug testing landscape over recent years. This method is preferred by many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over standard urine tests. With zero-tolerance policies, employers, courts, and those on probation favor hair follicle testing due to its longer drug use detection window of up to 90 days. Additionally, the observed collection method makes it nearly impossible to tamper with, offering a more reliable test, although for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests still lead in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an influential technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a long-term analysis of alcohol and drug levels by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When taken from the scalp, hair can show drug and alcohol use for up to three months. It's easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of roughly 200 strands (the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp weighs about 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to weigh this on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Scalp hair refers only to hair from the head, while body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage that involves integrating a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring it was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and doing any extra data entry that may not have been done through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts an initial check for drug use. Though it’s a cost-effective method to rule out drug use, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal validity. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample shows positive in Screening, more hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly complex.

Confirmation of positive screened results is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, offering a longer detection window than urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: The difficulty in cheating a hair drug test ensures more exact results.
  • Tracks usage history: Provides data on drug consumption patterns over time, instead of just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other testing methodologies.
  • Variable results: Differences such as hair color and growth rate can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests," this procedure actually analyzes the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the skin

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
