Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Bangor, Washington. For those seeking hair or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing is adept in follicle tests, operating centers in every city Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for analysis. Tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom testing.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a more common drug testing method. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer it over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation officers utilize these tests. Hair tests offer an extended detection window, up to 90 days, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for recent drug use detection (last 5 days), urine tests remain precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the growing strands. A sample taken nearest to the scalp can offer up to a three-month detection period for substances. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximating the thickness of a #2 pencil), provides 100mg, the optimum amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or when testing for more than 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's best to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When we say head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically—body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab's system. This phase includes checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry that is not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result from Screening requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples that test preliminarily positive in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests preliminarily positive during the Screening, additional hair is extracted from the overall specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are washed as needed before confirmation. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, versus the shorter period for urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair test is very challenging, thus results are more reliable.
  • Tracks historical usage: Offers a usage pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests are generally pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", this analysis inspects the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Bangor, WA
Hair follicle tests offer superior detection capability when compared to traditional urine tests. While urine tests may be easily compromised, hair testing is much more reliable and provides consistent results. For those in need of stringent substance use policies, hair tests operate on a zero-tolerance framework, ensuring employers receive an accurate picture of their employees' substance use.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Bangor, WA
The advantage of hair follicle testing lies in its ability to capture a long history of drug use, often up to 90 days. This extended detection window gives employers a broader overview of an individual's substance history, which urine tests cannot match. Such comprehensive insights allow organizations to make informed decisions regarding employment and workforce management.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
