Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Bunk Foss, Washington. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol screen, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair assessments. We have centers nationwide capable of conducting a hair exam. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used. Hair evaluations can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other specific needs.

Recently, drug screening methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine screens. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers enforcing strict drug policies, legal agencies, and probationers. Their advantage lies in a longer drug detection timeframe—up to 90 days—secured through observed collection and near-immunity to tampering. Yet, for drug use within a recent five-day window, urine tests remain unmatched in precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands of developing hair, it offers a prolonged retrospective view of alcohol and drug use. When hair samples are taken close to the head, they may reveal a detection span of up to around three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, containing about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil), nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg, the perfect quantity for both preliminary and confirmatory tests. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If head hair isn’t available, a similar amount of body hair can be used as an alternative. When mentioning head hair, it strictly pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a lab encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into the lab's system. This process includes ensuring that the sample arrived sealed and intact, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid evaluation for the presence of drugs. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Samples yielding a presumptive positive during Screening require a secondary validation.

For samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Any positive result from the screening stage undergoes Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples are subjected to washing before Confirmation, where necessary. From Accessioning through to Confirmation, the entire process is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection range.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Historical usage data: It offers insights into the drug use pattern over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly than other testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand rather than the follicle under the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
