Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Clarkston Heights, Washington. Specializing in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, our centers are nationwide and ready to assist. For a valid test, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required from the head or body. This test can examine for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specified substances.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in recent years. It is increasingly preferred by employers, the judiciary, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine testing. Used by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, and by courts for individuals under probation, it offers a detection period of up to 90 days. The test is collected under supervision and is extremely hard to manipulate. However, urine testing remains the go-to method for detecting very recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair accumulates biomarker evidence of substance use within its fibers, providing a historical account of up to roughly three months when gathered near the scalp. This method is straightforward to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

To obtain a 100mg sample, optimal for both screening and confirmation, collect a 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hair strands (similar in width to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp. For assessments like EtG, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Usage of a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is absent, equivalent body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory procedure for drug test analysis: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where a sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s system. This involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening provides a cost-efficient way of excluding drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

For samples indicating a presumptive positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. This stage isolates drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid testing, illustrating the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Positive results from Screening are validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples testing positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair oversight and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, outlasting the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Chronological insights: It offers a timeline of drug use, unlike methods that only identify recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent ingestion: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair hue and individual growth variations affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Known colloquially as "hair follicle tests", analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
