Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Glenwood, Washington. Seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation? Our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers across the country, equipped to conduct hair assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is sufficient. Our hair tests can determine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing programs.

Recently, the preference for conducting drug evaluations has increasingly leaned towards hair follicle testing. Many organizations, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts opt for hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers adhering to strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and probationers rely on hair testing. Its chief advantage is a prolonged detection period reaching up to 90 days, executed under supervision, making tampering almost impossible. However, for drug use screening in the last 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an approximate 90-day period of alcohol and drug presence. Hair is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels beyond 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair, while body hair includes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for evaluating a drug test result entails four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial handling of a sample within a lab's framework. This involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-savvy method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be court-acceptable. Samples that show presumptive positive results during Screening require further confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. At this phase, substances are drawn out from hair at a significantly lower concentration than with other approaches (e.g., urine or saliva), underscoring why hair drug analysis is among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation for any positive Screening result proceeds using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to falsify: It is exceedingly hard to falsify a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can show a timeline of substance use over months, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug indicators in hair.

Note: Although commonly referenced as "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outshine urine testing in Glenwood, WA? Hair testing offers a broader detection scope, identifying substance use up to 90 days prior. Unlike urine tests, which capture only recent usage, hair tests ensure comprehensive insight into an individual's behavior, marking it superior in reliability and thoroughness.

The accuracy of hair testing mitigates false negatives and inconsistencies seen in traditional urine methods. Opting for hair follicle evaluations offers a more dependable means to uphold drug-free environments.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing's strength in Glenwood, WA, lies in its extended detection period, stretching up to 90 days. This longevity provides a clearer picture of an individual's substance use across months, rather than days, allowing employers to assess historical behavior effectively.

Employers benefit from this extensive window, acquiring detailed insights into a potential or current employee's substance history, assisting in educated decision-making for a safer work environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Glenwood, WA, present a robust guard against sample tampering. The difficulty in adulterating a hair sample ensures the results are authentic and credible, providing users with substantial confidence in the findings.

Particles remain embedded in hair strands, resisting external tampering techniques that may otherwise jeopardize results. Thus, hair testing provides an unquestionable, tamper-resistant methodology for drug evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
