Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug screenings in Kitsap Lake, Washington. For those needing hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing provides specialized services with facilities available nationwide, including in your local city, ready to perform a hair screening. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from your scalp or body for most tests. Hair follicle tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

Recently, drug testing methods are increasingly utilizing hair follicle screenings. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over standard urine ones. Employers with no-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals commonly use hair follicle tests due to their extended detection capability, up to 90 days. These tests are highly reliable with observation collection processes, making tampering nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain the preferred method for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as a robust method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by preserving biomarkers within the hair strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair can show a detection timeframe of up to roughly 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) from near the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for examination and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't present, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. 'Head hair' pertains solely to scalp hair, while 'body hair' refers to other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps in processing a lab drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system initially. This covers confirming correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any additional information missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient option to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result from Screening requires confirmation for court validation. Presumptively positive samples in Screening need further confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. At this stage, drugs are removed from hair at a substantially lower concentration than in alternative methodologies (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to carry out.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical patterns: It can illustrate a trend of drug usage over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
