In Maxwelton, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessment services. For those requiring alcohol or drug testing via hair analysis, our expertise and nationwide testing centers provide efficient and accessible services. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. Options include drug, alcohol/ETG, and customizable tests.

Recently, hair follicle testing has grown increasingly common in drug screening. This method is favored by many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists over traditional urine samples. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judiciary systems, and probationers often opt for this test, given its extended detection period of up to 90 days. Despite its advantages, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting very recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Analyzing hair has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a detailed record of drug and alcohol use by capturing biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of roughly three months for drugs and alcohol. It's straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment containing approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input not integrated into an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is a budget-wise approach to rule out drug consumption in the majority of cases, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that yield presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in the Screening stage, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair screening particularly challenging.

Verification of any positive screening output occurs using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity undergo washing before confirmation if required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows historical trends: It reveals a drug usage pattern over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
