Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Seattle Heights, Washington. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing with centers available in cities nationwide to carry out hair tests. Typically, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient for most cases. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other purposes.

Recently, the trend for drug testing methods increasingly incorporates a hair follicle drug test. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal entities, and probation services favor hair follicle testing. Its main advantage includes a longer detection timeline of up to 90 days, observation during collection, and it is notably tamper-proof. Nonetheless, for drug consumption within the past 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now widely regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. The composition of hair fibers captures biomarkers, offering a prolonged record of alcohol and other drug presence. When samples are taken near the scalp, hair can provide an approximate detection period of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to obtain, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for initial and confirmatory screening. For EtG, additional testing, and/or assessments over 10 panels, 150mg of sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When referencing head hair, this pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing a drug test result involve four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the lab system. This process verifies whether the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an immediate cursory analysis for substances of abuse. Although cost-effective for largely ruling out drug use in most samples, any positive screening results must be confirmed to be valid in a legal context. Samples with presumptive positive results during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

For samples returning a presumptive positive in Screening, more hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. This phase involves concentrating drugs from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing is a highly intricate methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening findings employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation where required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the full laboratory process is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection window.
  • Resilience against fraudulent attempts: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thereby improving result accuracy.
  • Offers historical usage data: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It typically takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Relatively high cost: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher expenses than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Frequently termed "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
