Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Snohomish, Washington. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol testing, we excel in this field, with facilities available nationwide. Typically, the crown's hair length should be between 1.5 to 2 inches, though body hair is sometimes an option. This test can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other specialized hair testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle tests have become more prevalent for drug assessments. Various employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts are opting for this method over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers often utilize hair tests. A key advantage is its extensive detection period, generally up to 90 days, with an almost tamper-proof procedure. When analyzing use within the past five days, urine tests still offer superior accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, not easily tampered with, and is convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch specimen consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair indicates all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results encompasses four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab’s framework. This process verifies that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a rapid initial inspection for substances of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient way to identify the absence of drug use in most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be accepted as evidence in legal settings. Samples that appear positive during Screening require a subsequent confirmation step.

If a sample seems positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, the concentration of drugs is extracted from hair at levels much lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug tests the most challenging testing method to carry out.

Confirmation of any screening-positive result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each presumptive positive sample is cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage up to 90 days prior, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, rendering the outcomes more reliable.
  • Delivers historical insight: It offers a pattern of drug utilization over an extended time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically more costly than other testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
