Process Overview

Screening offers an introductory rapid assessment for substances. Though an economical means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to hold up in court. Samples appearing positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

For samples preliminarily positive in Screening, more hair is retrieved from the primary specimen and made ready for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair in significantly lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), highlighting the challenging nature of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any result testing positive during screening is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

The legal framework surrounding hair testing and the achievement of guidelines to ensure fairness, accuracy, and confidentiality in drug testing practices have also been discussed,and the SoHT consensus on general hair testing and testing for drugs of abuse was presented at the meeting and published as a Letter to the Editor.
