For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering a sample into a lab's system initially. This process verifies that the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for detecting drugs of abuse. Although Screening efficiently rules out drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal admissibility. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.
