In Big Chimney, West Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and we have facilities available in every city across the nation to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other specialized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug screening. Employers, legal authorities, and addiction specialists are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probationers rely on these tests for their extended detection period of up to 90 days, precision in observed collections, and the challenges in manipulating results. However, for recent consumption within five days, urine tests remain unparalleled in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encompasses a prolonged history of substances like alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the elongating hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can furnish up to roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable volume of body hair may be gathered. Reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair applies to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab’s system. It includes verifying that the sample was duly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be verified to be court-admissible. Any samples appearing positive in Screening necessitate a further confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive in the Screening stage, more hair is drawn from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), giving hair drug tracking its complexity.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is undertaken via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed pre-confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug examinations can recognize drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Cheat-resistant: It is exceptionally challenging to compromise a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronicling data: It can illustrate a trend of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of confirming recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth diversities can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair to urine testing in Big Chimney, WV, hair follicle tests clearly offer superior detection capabilities. Hair testing doesn't merely cover recent usage; it provides a thorough insight into substance habits extending back months. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
