Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Coal Fork, West Virginia. If hair drug or alcohol assessment is required, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers available Nationwide. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body suffices in most instances. Our hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to suit specific testing needs.

Over the past years, hair follicle drug exams have become a preferred method for drug testing. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for hair tests over traditional urine exams. This method benefits entities enforcing no-drug policies, legal bodies, or probationary conditions. Key advantages include a 90-day detection window, direct supervision during sample collection, and a near impossibility of result manipulation. However, urine tests remain superior for recent substance detection within a 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

The identification of drug and alcohol consumption is now increasingly effective through hair testing. The hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs usage by locking in biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair fiber. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal a substance detection window of nearly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and verification. When considering EtG, add-ons, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, the suggested specimen amount is 150mg. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, equivalent body hair may be used. Reference to head hair applies solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists mainly of these four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary handling of a sample into the laboratory’s framework. This process verifies the sample is adequately sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift examination for commonly abused drugs. Screening presents an economical means to exclude drug consumption in most cases; however, any positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any Screening samples that are presumptively positive must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample is presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Here drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation by using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples receive necessary washing prior to confirmation. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is conducted under the scrutiny of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, outlasting the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage insight: The tests reveal drug use patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Constraints:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing strategies.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Frequently termed "hair follicle tests," these tests evaluate the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Coal Fork, WV, hair follicle testing outshines urine testing by offering broader and more accurate detection windows. While urine tests might capture recent drug use, hair testing provides a deeper historical overview of substance use.

  • Extended detection period
  • Less susceptible to manipulation
  • Comprehensive substance history
This makes hair testing the superior choice for entities demanding thorough and reliable results.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Coal Fork, WV reveals drug use for up to 90 days, offering an extensive view of an individual's substance habits. This extended detection window allows employers a comprehensive insight into the drug history of prospective hires. Unlike other tests, it encapsulates a significant timeline of an individual's drug interactions, ensuring a broader and more thorough background check.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
