Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing in Lester, West Virginia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with testing facilities in all cities nationwide. For most scenarios, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body may be utilized. Hair tests are capable of analyzing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

In the past few years, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts advocate for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and individuals on probation. The key advantage of these tests is their extended detection window of up to 90 days, ensured by an observed collection process, which is hard to cheat. However, urine tests remain the go-to for identifying drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeframe of up to 3 months for alcohol and substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, containing around 200 strands of hair (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) from just below the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for precision. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial cursory check for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective way to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples that show presumptive positives during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

For samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are drawn out from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples yielding presumptive positives are cleaned prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection span: Hair drug tests detect drug usage over a period reaching up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Historical usage pattern: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lester, WV, hair follicle testing clearly outshines urine testing. These tests offer longer detection windows and are celebrated for their accuracy and reliability. Hair testing detects a wider range of substances over time, providing a comprehensive look into an individual's drug use history. Extended Detection Window

In Lester, WV, hair follicle testing delivers an extended detection period, capturing drug use up to 90 days prior. This allows employers to understand an applicant's or employee's long-term substance history. Unlike urine tests, which cover a shorter time frame, hair tests offer a broader view, enabling businesses to make well-informed hiring or retention decisions based on a thorough assessment of past drug activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
