Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Mabscott, West Virginia. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise is in hair testing, and we offer centers across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, the adoption of hair follicle drug tests in drug screening methods has increased. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. These tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation due to their extended drug detection window, reaching up to 90 days. Hair tests are collected under observation and are nearly impossible to manipulate, although urine tests remain precise for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a vital method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair strands capture a history of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers a detection span of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (reminiscent of the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" specifically means scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of laboratory testing for drug detection includes four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing step that logs a sample into the lab's system. It involves checking that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening is a preliminary and cost-efficient method to identify potential drug use in most samples. However, even though Screening can initially indicate potential drug use, all positive screenings necessitate confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive result during Screening, an additional portion of the original sample is taken for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), demonstrating why hair drug analysis is among the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of a positive screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before further confirmation as necessary. The entirety of the lab process—from Accessioning to Confirmation—is monitored under the guidelines of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Reliability: It is difficult to deceive a hair drug test, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time, rather than recent use alone.

Limitations:

  • Unable to indicate recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing forms.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth rate can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination pertains to the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Mabscott, WV, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in detection capability and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair tests offer a far superior detection window of drug use, capturing substance traces over months rather than days.

Hair tests provide a more comprehensive picture of an individual's drug history, making them the preferred choice for those who need to ensure thorough and accurate results.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
