Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Milton, West Virginia. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing, with facilities available in cities across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is necessary. Hair testing can detect the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, reliance on hair follicle drug testing has surged. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests instead of regular urine tests. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation often prefer hair follicle testing. The remarkable advantage is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, ensuring observation during collection and minimizing the possibility of tampering. However, to detect drug use within a five-day period, urine tests remain the more precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly seen as an effective means to identify the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer up to approximately a quarterly detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately equivalent to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is considered the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or over 10-panel assessments, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically indicating scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the introductory processing of a sample into the lab’s system. This process involves ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data documentation not covered by an electronic custody protocol.

The Screening phase entails an initial rapid verification for drugs of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient method to negate drug usage in most cases, an affirmative screen must be validated to hold up in judicial proceedings. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening do require additional verification.

If a sample is tentatively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is drawn from the original sample and prepped for the Extraction phase. At this stage, drugs are retrieved from hair at notably lower concentrations than via other methodologies (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most complex method to perform.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are preliminarily positive undergo a washing procedure before final confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug assessments can recognize drug use for up to three months, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistant to manipulation: The likelihood of defrauding a hair drug test is minimal, rendering the outcomes more precise.
  • Offers chronological information: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over a time period, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become traceable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to be pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth patterns can influence the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis centers on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing undeniably surpasses traditional urine tests in Milton, WV. One of the key benefits of hair testing is its superior detection accuracy, providing a more reliable assessment of drug use patterns. With hair tests, even substances ingested over extended periods are detectable, outclassing the limited timeframe of urine tests. This comprehensive oversight allows for informed decisions based on accurate data.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Milton, WV, provides employers with a thorough understanding of an individual’s substance use history. Unlike other testing methods, hair analysis can reveal drug consumption up to 90 days prior. This extensive timeframe empowers employers to make more informed decisions, drawing from a broader perspective on the potential impact of substance use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the most significant advantages of hair follicle testing in Milton, WV, is its tamper-resistant nature. Unlike urine tests, hair samples are nearly impossible to adulterate, ensuring the integrity of the results. Employers benefit from the reliability of hair testing, which substantially reduces the risk of manipulation or adulteration, providing unquestionable outcomes that bolster trust in the testing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
