In Prince, West Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol tests, our expertise lies in hair testing conducted at centers across the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. These tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing needs.

Recently, the adoption of hair follicle drug testing has surged. Courts, employers, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over the classic urine test. Employing zero-tolerance policies, employers and probation officers benefit from hair tests due to their longer detection window, spanning up to 90 days, and the difficulty involved in tampering. For recent drug use detection within the last five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair contains a comprehensive archive of alcohol and drug use by encasing biomarkers within the growing strands. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to harvest, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the volume of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If head hair isn't accessible, the equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. When addressing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for analyzing a drug test consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the entry phase of a sample into the lab's records. This phase ensures the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplemental data input not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drug misuse. Although Screening is an economical approach for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive indication must be substantiated for legal credibility. Any samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening require further validation.

If a sample is presumed positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and made ready for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which is why hair drug analysis is one of the most intricate methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the narrower window of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Altering a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Tracks usage history: It outlines a timeline of drug consumption, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests are typically pricier than other drug testing options.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth disparities can impact the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently dubbed "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
