Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. If you require a drug or alcohol hair analysis, we have expertise in hair testing and offer facilities in cities across the nation, including body hair options for most cases. These tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are shifting towards this method instead of urine testing. Hair follicle tests suit employers who enforce strict no-drug policies. They offer the advantage of a longer detection window, lasting up to 90 days, and are nearly impossible to tamper with. For detecting drug use within 5 days, however, urine tests still hold superiority in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, documenting a prolonged history of substances ingested. When the sample is collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch section comprising approximately 200 hair strands, comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil, provides around 100mg, which is the ideal quantity for preliminary and confirmatory tests. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the beginning stage where a sample is integrated into a lab’s system. This encompasses confirming the sample's proper sealing and dispatch, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any additional data inputs not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening represents an initial swift check for substance abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-effective method to rule out substance presence in most tests, a positive result requires confirmation to maintain legal admissibility. Every sample indicating drug presence in Screening necessitates further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. In this stage, drugs are isolated from the hair at lower concentrations than other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing notably challenging.

Confirmation of all positive Screening results involves GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo a washing process prior to confirmation if required. The comprehensive lab process spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests are effective for detecting drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a limited detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, increasing result accuracy.
  • Traces historical consumption: It provides insights into the pattern of drug usage over time, not solely recent ingestion.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent ingestion: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the testing focuses on the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
