Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Windsor Heights, WV. For hair or alcohol testing needs, our expertise lies in hair testing with centers nationwide ready to assist. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are chosen for zero-tolerance policies, court orders, and probation requirements. Their main advantage is a 90-day drug detection window, observed collection process, and resistance to tampering. Urine tests remain best for detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become a significant instrument in identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair during its growth process. Collected near the scalp, hair can provide an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. It is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, containing roughly 200 strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal specimen for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding ten, a recommendation of 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. In cases where scalp hair isn’t accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary procedures involved in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of an initial examination for abusive substances. While Screening is a budget-friendly approach to negate drug presence in most samples, a positive Screening still needs confirmation for it to stand in court. All samples that are preliminarily positive during Screening require supplementary confirmation.

In the case where Screening results are preliminarily positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. At this phase, substances are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive Screening results is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All preliminarily positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to fake: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably challenging, enhancing reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over an extensive period, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot discover immediate use: Detection in hair takes roughly 5-7 days following use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the assessment evaluates the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
