Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Adams, Wisconsin. For those seeking hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and we have facilities in all cities across the nation capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, you’ll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for most tests. Hair analyses can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific testing needs.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing has increasingly integrated hair follicle testing. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer this method over the traditional urine test. Organizations with strict anti-drug policies, as well as legal and probationary authorities, favor hair follicle drug tests. The most significant advantage is a longer detection period of up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process that is nearly cheat-proof. However, urine tests remain most precise for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective means for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair archives a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When acquired near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, making it the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we are indicating only scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. It includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid examination for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that are presumptive positives in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample is a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from the hair at a significantly lower concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It's exceedingly difficult to cheat a hair drug test, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Delivers historical information: It can outline a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
