Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Bristol, Wisconsin. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our centers, located nationwide, specialize in this testing method. Generally, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from your scalp or body. Tests can reveal information on drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more commonplace in drug assessments. Employers, legal practitioners, and substance abuse specialists are favoring these tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle tests are essential for organizations with stringent drug policies, court orders, and probationary conditions. Their key advantage is a detection period extending up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, and hard to manipulate. However, for recent drug use past 5 days, a urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand, hair offers an extended historical profile of substance use. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal substance consumption over a period extending up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch length consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) proximate to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and analyses beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. In situations where scalp hair isn't available, a comparable volume of body hair can be gathered. When we reference head hair, we mean exclusively scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for drug testing entails four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a specimen into the laboratory system. This phase involves confirming the sample’s proper sealing and delivery, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, expedient assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most cases, confirming a positive screen is necessary for legal admissibility. Samples yielding a preliminary positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

For samples yielding preliminary positives in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. This phase extracts substances from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex methodology to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating preliminary positives are cleaned before confirmation when needed. The laboratory process encompassing Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a lesser detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, ensuring heightened result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: Provides a timeline of substance use over an interval, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent intake: Detection in hair requires roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair hue and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
