Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Campia, Wisconsin. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analyses and operates testing centers nationwide capable of performing a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored hair testing services.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly include hair follicle drug tests. Many workplaces, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals mandate hair drug testing over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are preferred by employers with strict drug-free policies, legal systems, and probation programs. The main advantage is their extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected under observation, making them difficult to tamper with. However, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests still offer the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The detection of drugs and alcohol through hair testing is now regarded as a highly effective approach. Hair captures long-term usage data by embedding biomarkers within its growing fibers. When sampled from the scalp, hair can reveal a drug and alcohol history stretching back about three months. The collection process is straightforward and the sample is tough to tamper with, plus it’s convenient to mail.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is considered the optimal amount for effective screening and confirmation. For EtG assessments, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is preferable. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. In cases where scalp hair is absent, a proportional amount of body hair can be utilized. When discussing head hair, it's specific to scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing process in the lab consists of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is initially integrated into the lab's system. This process involves ensuring the sample's seal and shipment were intact, assigning it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and filling in any data not provided by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening acts as a preliminary evaluation for the presence of drug abuse. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug usage concerns in most samples, any positives from this stage must be validated for court use. Presumptive positives in Screening necessitate a further confirmation step.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair strands are taken from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted at lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a particularly challenging procedure.

All positive findings from screening undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, samples that are presumptively positive are cleansed based on requirements. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug testing can reveal substance use up to 90 days, while urine testing has a more limited timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: The difficulty of altering hair test results enhances their reliability.
  • Tracks historical usage: Offers insight into drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to become traceable in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Tests often termed "hair follicle tests" actually assess the hair strand above the scalp—not the underlying hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In comparing hair follicle tests with urine tests in Campia, WI, hair testing shows superior accuracy and reliability. With a broader detection spectrum, hair tests are more effective than urine tests.

Hair tests demonstrate a greater ability to identify substance use history, whereas urine tests primarily capture recent usage.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
