Providing hair follicle drug testing in Gillett, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing ensures thorough assessments for drugs and alcohol. Our specialized hair testing services are available nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, but body hair is also acceptable. Hair samples may be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for drug screening, replacing traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probationary programs prefer hair testing due to its extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days and supervised collection process. Despite being almost cheat-proof, urine tests remain slightly more precise for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now acknowledged as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug usage. Hair serves as a chronic marker for substance intake by preserving biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When cut close to the scalp, a hair sample can offer a drug and alcohol detection span of nearly three months. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and transportation is hassle-free.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprised of around 200 strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) collected near the scalp provides 100mg, which is optimal for testing and validation. For screenings such as EtG, additional panels exceeding ten, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest checking the specimen weight with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair might be utilized. When we mention head hair, this pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types like facial and underarm hair.

Process Overview

The drug testing process in a lab comprises four essential phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial intake of a sample into the lab's protocol, ensuring correct sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data in the absence of an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most cases, any positive result from Screening must be verified for legal acceptance. Presumptively positive samples require subsequent verification.

Should a Screening test yield a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated at concentrations far lower compared to other methods such as urine or oral fluid, highlighting the complexity of hair analysis.

Verification of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. Samples that are deemed presumptively positive go through a cleansing process before verification as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire procedure is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair testing can trace drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter range.
  • Hard to deceive: Counterfeiting a hair drug test is notably difficult, hence producing more reliable results.
  • Reflects usage history: It reveals a history of substance intake across a timeframe, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs only become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the sub-scalp follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Choosing hair follicle testing over urine testing in Gillett, WI, provides unparalleled detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests offer a distinct advantage with their longer detection windows, often spanning up to 90 days, which outperforms the typical urine test. This ensures that employers and other stakeholders receive comprehensive insights into an individual's substance use history, promoting informed decision-making.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Gillett, WI, provides an extensive detection window, capturing drug use over a period up to 90 days. This allows employers the benefit of a broader perspective on an employee or applicant's substance habits, far exceeding the limited timeframe offered by traditional methods. This approach ensures informed decisions regarding personnel management and compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
