Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Pilsen, Wisconsin. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our expertise in hair testing is accessible nationwide through our numerous centers capable of administering such tests. Generally, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing services.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been prioritized in recent years as an alternative to traditional urine tests by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probation services frequently prefer hair tests due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days, observability during sample collection, and difficulty in tampering. However, urine tests remain the optimal choice for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Testing hair has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands contain biological markers within their fibers, offering a prolonged history of substance use. A sample taken near the scalp can provide a detection period for drugs and alcohol of up to about three months. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands of hair (equivalent to a #2 pencil thickness) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG tests, additional screenings, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, we're specifically referring to scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses any other hair like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results includes four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's initial setup in the laboratory's system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipment, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data that an electronic custody system does not provide.

Screening acts as a preliminary assessment for commonly abused drugs. Although Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug usage for most samples, confirmation is mandatory for any admissible positive screen in a court setting. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. This stage involves extracting drug substances from hair at a considerably reduced concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging to perform.

Confirmation for any positive result from Screening is conducted through methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected as positive undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It's immensely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Deliver historical usage patterns: It reveals trends in drug usage over time and not just recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Approximately 5-7 days are needed before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally bears a higher cost than other testing techniques.
  • Result deviations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair samples.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually targets the hair strand itself and not the follicle situated under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
