According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.86 square miles (10.00 km2); 3.74 square miles (9.69 km2) is land and 0.12 square miles (0.31 km2) is water. Aurora is surrounded by mixed coniferous/deciduous forest and is near many lakes.

The Northern Lights Music Festival is presented each year in the summer and includes music concerts.
