According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 23.3 square miles (60.4 km²), of which, 20.3 square miles (52.7 km²) of it is land and 3.0 square miles (7.7 km²) of it (12.78%) is water.

As of the census of 2000, there were 946 people, 346 households, and 265 families residing in the town. The population density was 46.5 people per square mile (18.0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.31% White, 0.11% African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.21% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.21% of the population.
