A post office has been in operation at Hazen since 1885. A. D. Hazen, an early postmaster, gave the settlement its name. Hazen was laid out in 1913, when the railroad was extended to that point.

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,411 people, 1,020 households, and 742 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,898.4 inhabitants per square mile (733.0/km2). There were 1,074 housing units at an average density of 845.7 per square mile (326.5/km2).
