According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 34.7 square miles (89.9 km²), of which 34.5 square miles (89.3 km²) is land and 0.2 square miles (0.6 km²) is water.

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,440 people, 1,231 households, and 940 families residing in the town. The population density was 99.8 people per square mile (38.5/km²). There were 1,307 housing units at an average density of 37.9 per square mile (14.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.62% White, 0.32% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.15% of the population.

There were 1,231 households out of which 33.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.2% were married couples living together, 7.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.6% were non-families. 19.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
