Stronghurst is located in southern Henderson County at 40°44?41?N 90°54?32?W? / ?40.74472°N 90.90889°W? / 40.74472; -90.90889 (40.744616, -90.908801). Illinois Route 94 passes through the village, leading north 9 miles (14 km) to Biggsville and south 15 miles (24 km) to La Harpe. Burlington, Iowa, is 15 miles to the northwest.

As of the census of 2000, there were 896 people, 353 households, and 236 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,009.8 people per square mile (388.7/km²). There were 380 housing units at an average density of 428.3 per square mile (164.9/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 99.22% White, 0.11% African American, and 0.67% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.11% of the population.

There were 353 households out of which 31.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.0% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.9% were non-families. 29.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.97.
