How does drug testing work?

Several factors play a role in the cycle of a drug test, from collection and analysis to the final result. When a donor provides a specimen, the specimen begins on a journey of specific steps in a streamlined and systematic process to provide a consistent and reliable result. All of our collection personnel are professionally trained and certified to ensure that they provide a positive experience for an individual submitting for a drug test. This process is used in conjunction with our SAMHSA Certified laboratory teams that execute the highest standards of quality control and analysis on all specimens

**What Affects Turnaround Time?**

Turnaround time is key for both employers and individuals awaiting test results. Our labs measure turnaround time across three main stages to keep you informed about any factors affecting the testing process.

**Collection Site** The initial collection stage is crucial for specimen integrity. Our trained staff follows strict protocols to ensure reliable results.
**Electronic Chain of Custody (eCCF)**  With thousands of electronically enabled collection sites, we use eCCF to streamline the process, reduce errors, and ensure accurate timestamps.
**Logistics**  Time-sensitive factors like pickup schedules, holidays, weather, and collection timing can impact turnaround. Our efficient logistics team works to keep your testing experience smooth and timely.

What Happens When The Specimen Reaches the Lab?

ARRIVALTESTING PANELSRESULTS REPORTING
  • Drug Testing specimens reach the lab through many different couriers
  • Entering the laboratory, specimens are accessioned into the lab management system
  • all of our lab results are sent to be reviewed by our in-house medical review officer
  • Once they arrive at the unloading dock, they are considered received and entered into processing
  • All specimens go through an initial screening process

  • Once the specimens are received, they are removed from their packaging, sorted by specimen type, and transitioned to the laboratory floor
  • If the screening results are negative,e no further testing is needed

  • If Initial screening indicates a presumptive positive, the specimen will undergo further testing

Which Drug Test is Right For You?

Urine Drug Testing

Two-tiered testing/confirmation process at the laboratory (the initial screen/confirmation). Negative screening results are typically released within 24 hours and non-negative screens are typically released within an additional 24-72 hours. This time is measured from the time the specimen reaches the lab for testing.

Hair Drug Testing

Two-tiered testing/Confirmation process at the laboratory (the initial screen/confirmation). Negative Screening Results are typically released within 48 hours and non-negative results requiring confirmation testing are typically released within an additional 48-72 hours from the time the specimen arrives at the lab for testing

Saliva drug testing

Saliva (oral) testing, also called a mouth swab test, may be used if an employer or other tester is interested in knowing about recent drug use, but is not ideal for surveying long-term use of drugs. Most saliva drug tests can detect most usage within a few hours up to 3 days. Saliva is an easy lab test to gather samples, is less susceptible to adulteration, and can be tested for alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, and methamphetamines.

Blood drug testing

A blood drug test may be used to determine the amounts of drugs in an employee's system at that very moment. A variety of drugs can be tested for in blood: amphetamines, cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamines, opiates, nicotine, and alcohol. Blood testing is invasive but there is little chance for adulteration. Blood testing may be performed in the emergency room for toxicology testing, as well.
