A DOT physical is an in-depth health check mandated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) for all commercial drivers. This assessment ensures that drivers are physically, mentally, and emotionally capable of managing large vehicles on public roads. A certified medical examiner (CME) listed on the NRCME conducts the exam. Passing results in obtaining a DOT medical card, essential for maintaining a valid CDL license under FMCSA regulations. Call us at 800-221-4291 if another DOT agency regulates you and you need guidance on the required exam.

  • We offer 1, 2 and 3 year memberships (multi-year discounts)
  • All random selection testing and testing fees included (no hidden costs)
  • MIS report at year-end and upon request
  • DER support, Clearinghouse assistance (FMCSA), DOT Physicals, MVR Reports & Supervisor Training

Why is a DOT Consortium Required?

Owner Operators- DOT requires all owner-operators to enroll in a consortium so they are included in a compliant random testing pool because they cannot randomly test themselves.

Small Employers-Some smaller companies may not have enough drivers or safety-sensitive employees to maintain their own statistically valid random pool. Therefore, by joining a consortium, they are combined with other companies to form a large pool that meets DOT testing requirements.

Large Employers-Larger fleets may manage their own random pool but often use a consortium/TPA to outsource the process, reduce administrative burden, and ensure strict compliance.

DOT Consortium: Frequently Asked Questions

What constitutes a DOT Consortium (C/TPA) and who requires it?

Answer: A C/TPA acts as a service agent responsible for managing some or all facets of an employer's drug and alcohol testing program, which includes managing random testing pools and ensuring conformity with 49 CFR part 40.

Are random testing percentages consistent or subject to modification?

Answer: The DOT's random testing rates may shift annually based on positivity rates. However, in our consortium, regardless of the variation in testing rates, all DOT random testing fees are covered.

What is the procedure upon selection for a random test?

Answer: Upon notification, ADT informs the company DER or Owner Operator via email/phone about the nearest testing center and detailed instructions. The chosen employee must immediately head to the testing facility.

Which substances are screened in a DOT drug test?

Answer: A DOT drug test evaluates a DOT 5-panel urine sample and a DOT breath alcohol test. Ensure all testing is carried out using a Federal CCF and Federal Alcohol Testing Form.

Can assistance be provided during a DOT audit or inspection?

Answer: Yes, ADT can help by organizing necessary documents such as pre-employment tests, proof of random pool enrollment, supervisor training certificates, DOT policy formulation, and MIS reports.

How frequently is it possible to update the employee pool?

Answer: We verify employee list updates quarterly. Employers have the freedom to add or remove covered employees anytime before selection dates.
