A DOT physical is an extensive health assessment mandated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) for all operators of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs). This evaluation ensures drivers possess the necessary physical, mental, and emotional stability to safely handle large vehicles on the roads. Conducted by a certified medical examiner (CME) registered with the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME), clearing this exam grants drivers a DOT medical certificate (also known as a DOT medical card), essential for retaining a valid CDL license as per FMCSA guidelines. For guidance on the required DOT physical if you fall under another DOT agency's jurisdiction, call us at 800-221-4291.

  • We offer 1, 2 and 3 year memberships (multi-year discounts)
  • All random selection testing and testing fees included (no hidden costs)
  • MIS report at year-end and upon request
  • DER support, Clearinghouse assistance (FMCSA), DOT Physicals, MVR Reports & Supervisor Training

Why is a DOT Consortium Required?

Owner Operators- DOT requires all owner-operators to enroll in a consortium so they are included in a compliant random testing pool because they cannot randomly test themselves.

Small Employers-Some smaller companies may not have enough drivers or safety-sensitive employees to maintain their own statistically valid random pool. Therefore, by joining a consortium, they are combined with other companies to form a large pool that meets DOT testing requirements.

Large Employers-Larger fleets may manage their own random pool but often use a consortium/TPA to outsource the process, reduce administrative burden, and ensure strict compliance.

DOT Consortium: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a DOT Consortium (c/TPA) and who needs it?

A c/TPA consortium provides support in managing an employer's drug and alcohol testing programs, which includes orchestrating random testing pools and ensuring adherence to compliance regimes as set forth in 49 CFR part 40.

Are random testing percentages always the same or do they change?

Random testing rates under the DOT can fluctuate annually based on positivity trends. Nevertheless, within our consortium, all DOT random testing fees are covered, regardless of percentage changes.

What happens when I am selected for a random test?

ADT will reach out to the company's DER or owner-operator via email or phone with information on the nearest testing site and essential details. Upon notification, the chosen employee must promptly go to the testing location.

What drugs are tested on a DOT drug test?

DOT drug assessments comprise a DOT 5-panel urine analysis and a DOT breath alcohol test. It is crucial to perform all tests using a Federal CCF and Federal Alcohol Testing Form.

Can you help during a DOT audit or inspection?

Yes, ADT provides assistance for DOT audits or inspections, organizing necessary documents such as pre-employment tests, evidence of random pool enrollment, supervisor training certificates, DOT policy development, and MIS reports.

How often can I update my employee pool?

Employee roster updates occur quarterly. Employers retain the flexibility to add or remove covered employees before selection phases.
