The DOT physical is an in-depth health screening mandated by the U.S. Department of Transportation for drivers of commercial motor vehicles. This test is essential to ensure that drivers are fit physically, mentally, and emotionally to handle large vehicles safely on the highways. A certified medical examiner (CME) from the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME) conducts the assessment. Successfully passing the exam results in obtaining a DOT medical certificate, also known as a Medical Examiners Certificate or DOT medical card, necessary for keeping a CDL license valid under FMCSA rules. If you are subject to other DOT regulations and need help understanding the specific exam required, you can contact us at 800-221-4291.

  • We offer 1, 2 and 3 year memberships (multi-year discounts)
  • All random selection testing and testing fees included (no hidden costs)
  • MIS report at year-end and upon request
  • DER support, Clearinghouse assistance (FMCSA), DOT Physicals, MVR Reports & Supervisor Training

Why is a DOT Consortium Required?

Owner Operators- DOT requires all owner-operators to enroll in a consortium so they are included in a compliant random testing pool because they cannot randomly test themselves.

Small Employers-Some smaller companies may not have enough drivers or safety-sensitive employees to maintain their own statistically valid random pool. Therefore, by joining a consortium, they are combined with other companies to form a large pool that meets DOT testing requirements.

Large Employers-Larger fleets may manage their own random pool but often use a consortium/TPA to outsource the process, reduce administrative burden, and ensure strict compliance.

How Our DOT Consortium Works

DOT Consortium: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a DOT Consortium (C/TPA) and who requires it?

A consortium C/TPA is an agent responsible for overseeing all or a part of an employer's drug and alcohol testing program, encompassing random test groups and compliance activities as per 49 CFR part 40.

Do random testing rates remain constant or vary?

DOT random test rates fluctuate yearly depending on positive test outcomes. Nevertheless, in our consortium, irrespective of the rate changes, all DOT random testing charges are all-inclusive.

What transpires when someone is selected for a random test?

ADT alerts the company DER or Owner Operator via email or phone, providing details on the nearest test site and accompanying instructions. Once informed, the selected employee must promptly head to the test facility.

Which substances are tested in a DOT drug test?

The DOT screening checks for five-panel urine tests as well as DOT breath alcohol testing. It's essential these are carried out on the authorized Federal CCF and Federal Alcohol Testing Form.

Does ADT assist during a DOT audit or inspection?

Yes. ADT organizes necessary paperwork such as pre-employment testing records, evidence of random pool enrollment, supervisor training certificates, developed DOT policies, and MIS reports.

How frequently can the employee pool be updated?

We verify updates to the employee list every quarter. Employers have the flexibility to add or remove employees on the list any time before the selection date.
