A DOT physical exam is an in-depth health evaluation mandated by the Department of Transportation for all commercial motor vehicle operators. This test ascertains the physical, mental, and emotional wellness required for safe operation of large vehicles on roads open to the public. Only certified medical examiners listed on the National Registry administer the DOT physical. Successful completion awards a DOT medical certificate, necessary for maintaining a valid CDL per FMCSA rules. For guidance on which DOT physical applies, particularly if you're in another DOT-regulated sector, give us a call at 800-221-4291.

  • We offer 1, 2 and 3 year memberships (multi-year discounts)
  • All random selection testing and testing fees included (no hidden costs)
  • MIS report at year-end and upon request
  • DER support, Clearinghouse assistance (FMCSA), DOT Physicals, MVR Reports & Supervisor Training

Why is a DOT Consortium Required?

Owner Operators- DOT requires all owner-operators to enroll in a consortium so they are included in a compliant random testing pool because they cannot randomly test themselves.

Small Employers-Some smaller companies may not have enough drivers or safety-sensitive employees to maintain their own statistically valid random pool. Therefore, by joining a consortium, they are combined with other companies to form a large pool that meets DOT testing requirements.

Large Employers-Larger fleets may manage their own random pool but often use a consortium/TPA to outsource the process, reduce administrative burden, and ensure strict compliance.

DOT Consortium: Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a DOT Consortium (c/TPA) and who requires it?

A consortium, also known as a C/TPA, acts as a service agent that takes charge of either some or all aspects of an employer's drug and alcohol testing regimen, managing random test pools and adhering to compliance measures as dictated by 49 CFR part 40.

  • Do random testing rates remain constant or fluctuate?

DOT random testing rates may fluctuate yearly based on positivity statistics. Nonetheless, our consortium offers comprehensive DOT random testing fee coverage, regardless of the percentage adjustments.

  • What occurs after selection for a random test?

ADT will inform the company's Designated Employer Representative (DER) or an owner-operator by phone or email about the nearest testing facility and procedural guidelines. The individual selected must promptly travel to the testing site upon receiving notification.

  • What substances are tested during a DOT drug screening?

A DOT drug test encompasses a DOT 5-panel urine analysis and a DOT breath alcohol test. It's imperative to conduct all tests using a Federal CCF and an appropriate Federal Alcohol Testing Form.

  • Can assistance be given during a DOT audit or inspection?

Yes, ADT is equipped to manage all necessary documentation, which includes pre-employment test records, random pool enrollment proof, supervisor training certifications, DOT policy formulation, and MIS reports.

  • What's the frequency for updating the employee pool?

We undertake a quarterly affirmation of employee list updates. Employers have the flexibility to modify or refresh the roster of covered employees anytime ahead of selection periods.
