Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Abbeville, Alabama. If a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this area, boasting testing centers in every city nationwide that can conduct such exams. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are sufficient for testing. We can analyze hair samples for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other bespoke hair testing services.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for drug screenings. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts opt for hair drug testing over traditional urine analysis. Employers who enforce strict drug-free policies, courts, and those overseeing probation use this form of testing. A primary advantage of this method is its ability to detect drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, with samples collected under supervision, making it almost impossible to tamper with. However, for spotting drug usage within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective instrument for uncovering drug and alcohol usage. The strands retain markers within their fibers, offering a historic timeline of substance use. When clipped near the scalp, strands can reveal a detection timeline of up to three months for substances like alcohol. The collection process is straightforward, modification is challenging, and mailing is uncomplicated.

A collected sample of 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 hairs (equivalent in size to a #2 pencil), will yield 100mg, which is ideal for examining and validating purposes. For EtG analysis, additional elements, or testing exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent measure of body hair can be taken. References to head hair pertain specifically to scalp hair; body hair includes all other varieties (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test samples involves four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample undergoes preliminary processing within the lab’s system. This step ensures that the sample is sealed and mailed correctly, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

During Screening, an initial assessment checks for drug presence. Though economical for excluding drug use in most samples, a screen showing positive results requires additional confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples flagged as potentially positive in Screening necessitate a secondary verification process.

When a Screening yields a presumptive positive, more hair from the sample is extracted and readied for the Extraction phase. Drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair analysis a particularly challenging method.

Any preliminary positive screening findings undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives receive washing before confirmation when necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Challenging to deceive: Manipulating a hair test is extremely difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Shows usage trends: It can illustrate a long-term pattern of substance use, extending beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage undetectable: Drugs become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Higher expense: Hair testing tends to be costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", analysis is performed on the strand itself, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
