Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Addison, Alabama. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise lies in hair testing, with testing centers positioned throughout various cities Nationwide equipped to conduct hair analyses. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body suffices for most cases. We provide analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized hair testing solutions.

In the past few years, the preference for drug testing methods has increasingly included hair follicle tests. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals often mandate hair drug tests over the standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers who enforce strict drug-use policies, court systems, and probationary services. The main advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection window, often reaching up to 90 days, with sample collection observed to prevent tampering—a challenge to manipulate. Yet, urine tests remain most effective in detecting recent drug use within the prior 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly been regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg hair sample is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" strictly refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental steps in processing a drug test result in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening implements an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive screen must be verified to hold up in court. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair in much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is especially challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes takes place using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation meets the criteria of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests reveal substance use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have shorter detection periods.
  • Resistant to tampering: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: This method showcases a pattern of drug use over time instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Detection of drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher expense: Compared to other methods, hair drug tests tend to be costlier.
  • Variable results: Aspects like hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in Addison, AL by providing superior detection and reliability. Compared to traditional urine tests, hair tests have a much longer detection period, capturing a history of substance use more effectively.

Employers opting for hair testing over urine tests experience more reliable results. The benefits of using hair follicles include its more comprehensive view of an individual’s drug use history, enhancing the screening process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
