In Andalusia, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug tests. If you require a drug or alcohol test through hair sampling, our specialty in hair testing is unmatched, with testing centers available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required from the head or body. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method in recent years. Many employers, legal courts, and substance abuse experts now favor hair tests over the standard urine tests. Hair tests are invaluable for organizations with strict drug-use policies, legal entities, and probation conditions. The standout advantage is the longer detection span of up to 90 days, with an observed sample collection process that is nearly cheat-proof. Nonetheless, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests offer the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition for its efficacy in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This method offers an extended timeline by anchoring biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. Hair, when collected near the scalp, can furnish insights into up to roughly 90 days of drug and alcohol usage. This method is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A strand cluster approximately 1.5 inches long consisting of around 200 hairs (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, the optimum quantity for both screening and verification. For extended panel tests above 10 panels, EtG, or additional testing, a collection of 150mg is advisable. Usage of a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, the same amount of body hair can be collected. Our reference to head hair pertains solely to the scalp. Body hair encompasses all other regions (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result laboratory procedure encompasses four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample in a lab's system. This phase involves ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipping, allocating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and executing any additional data entry not furnished by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening consists of an initial assessment for substance abuse. It’s an economical method to dismiss drug use in most samples; however, a positive outcome must undergo confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

For samples indicating a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparation for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), rendering hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Positive results during Screening are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before the confirmation stage. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, providing a longer detection period than urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks pattern over time: Offers a timeline of drug utilization over weeks or months, not just immediate use.

Drawbacks:

  • Lacks detection of recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair pigmentation and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test measures the hair shaft, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
