Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Axis, Alabama. For those requiring hair-based drug or alcohol evaluations, we excel in hair testing with facilities across all cities Nationwide that can conduct such tests. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is necessary for testing. Hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing choices.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts prefer a hair drug analysis over standard urine tests. Hair follicle assessments are utilized by employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, the judicial system, and for those on probation. The key advantage is its extensive detection period for drug usage, generally up to 90 days, under direct observation, rendering it nearly foolproof. However, for detecting drug use within the recent 5-day window, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a record of alcohol and drug history by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of its growing strands. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a three-month period for alcohol and drug detection. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands of hair (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp can yield 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG tests and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. It is recommended to weigh the hair sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be provided, a similar volume of body hair may be obtained. Head hair denotes scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome includes four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step where a sample is integrated into the lab’s system. This step confirms proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry that an electronic chain of custody doesn’t provide.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drug use. While it is a cost-effective method for largely excluding drug use, any positive screen must be verified to hold up legally. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

For a presumptive positive result in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, the concentration of drugs extracted from hair is notably lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing exceptionally challenging to conduct.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods confirm any positive screening results. Presumptive positive samples undergo pre-confirmation washing as required. The complete laboratory journey from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocol and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection span.
  • Hard to fake: Falsifying a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers usage history: It allows for insights into drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: In general, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests," the actual test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Axis, AL, hair follicle testing offers markedly better accuracy than urine tests. Hair samples hold a consistent detection capability, unhindered by recent fluid intake or hydration levels, enhancing their reliability.
Unlike traditional urine tests, hair tests present a broader detection spectrum, recognizing substances over a prolonged frame, thus mitigating the limitations typical of urine testing.

The hair follicle method triumphs in effectiveness and precision over urine testing. While urine tests can be affected by recent consumption habits, hair testing remains constant, presenting uncompromised reliability, invaluable for various stakeholders.
Moreover, they provide a definitive view of substance history over 90 days, which standard urine tests cannot.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle test's prime advantage is its extended detection timeframe, giving employers in Axis, AL insights into a substance use history up to 90 days prior. This facilitates a thorough evaluation of the individual's long-term patterns.
Such extended analysis capabilities are essential in assessing ongoing substance issues, affording more comprehensive decision-making.

For Axis, AL employers, understanding an applicant or employee's past drug use is straightforward with hair follicle testing, covering an expansive period. Instead of just recent use, these tests offer a broad view into consistent and past substance interactions.
This long-term assessment is crucial for positions sensitive to safety and compliance in the workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Axis, AL stands out for its tamper-resistance. Traditional methods can be manipulated by sample adulteration, while hair tests provide accurate results with minimal risk of falsification.
This robustness ensures confidence in test outcomes, reducing opportunities for cheating.

Offering an almost tamper-proof testing solution, hair follicle tests in Axis, AL are less vulnerable to manipulation tactics that might compromise ordinary urine samples.
The high level of security and reliability they provide ensures the test results are legitimate and trustworthy, an asset for fair and equitable drug testing protocols.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
