Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Bangor, Alabama. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is available, as we operate centers across cities nationwide to facilitate these tests. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required. Assessment options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug use policies, courts, and probationary programs use these tests due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days. While highly reliable, urine testing remains optimal for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective means to uncover drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can reveal a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by retaining biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We advise determining the specimen's weight using a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates initial processing of a specimen into a laboratory's system. This includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any remaining data entry not already available through an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening represents an initial swift examination for substances of misuse. Though Screening offers an economical means to discard drug presence for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that present a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Within this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity undergo washing before confirmation if required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, while urine tests possess a narrower detection period.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: It is notably challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Presents historical insights: It can reveal a drug usage pattern over time, rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to identify recent consumption: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result inconsistencies: Elements like hair coloration and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself analyzes the hair strand and not the beneath-the-scalp hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Bangor, AL, hair follicle testing surpasses conventional urine tests in effectiveness. Its detection accuracy and reliability are superior, making it the preferred choice for various entities. Employers, the judiciary, and rehab professionals rely on hair tests for disciplined substance monitoring due to their robust detection capabilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
