Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair drug testing services in Banks, Alabama. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair analysis with testing facilities available across all cities Nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair suffices for testing. These tests are suitable for identifying drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common for substance checks. Many employers, courts, and experts in substance abuse prefer hair over urine tests. Those with zero-tolerance policies, the judiciary system, and probation officials utilize hair tests due to their benefits. One major advantage is the extended detection range of up to 90 days, collected via a monitored procedure, making them hard to manipulate. However, for determining drug use in the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a detailed long-term profile by retaining biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. If taken near the scalp, hair can show up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, minimally susceptible to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the ideal sample amount for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the hair using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory steps to process a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is integrated into the lab's system, which includes verifying the correct sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAB Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a quick initial drug check. Although Screening is an economical way to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Presumptively positive samples in Screening need further confirmation.

A presumptive positive sample in Screening leads to further specimen hair being prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are taken from hair at a lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing is challenging.

Any positive Screening result is confirmed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can track drug use up to 90 days, in contrast with urine tests that offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to fake: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite difficult, making the results more reliable.
  • Historical use pattern: Reveals long-term drug consumption trends, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: It usually takes 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Results variability: Hair color and growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually concerns the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why hair follicle testing is superior to urine testing in Banks, AL lies in its longevity and accuracy. Hair tests can spot drug use over an extended period compared to urine tests, offering comprehensive evaluations. This enhanced detection capability translates into reliable screening for employers and agencies committed to substance-free environments.

While urine tests may suffice for immediate past usage, they lack the prolonged scope that hair tests provide. Employers seeking accuracy and subtlety prefer hair follicle testing to capture a detailed substance history. Hair tests allow retrospective views up to 90 days, crucial for informed decision-making.

  • In Banks, AL, hair testing provides thorough detection of drug usage over longer durations.
  • The method is a preferred choice for entities enforcing strict drug policies.
  • Substances are detectable beyond short-term consumption periods with hair tests.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
