Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Berry, Alabama. If you require drug or alcohol hair testing, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in this method with centers nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is needed for testing. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized testing options.

Lately, drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists often prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests serve zero-tolerance policies, legal proceedings, and probationary monitoring. The major advantage is its extended detection window for substance use, up to 90 days, secure collection process, and high accuracy. However, urine tests remain best for recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant tool for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive history of alcohol and drug use by holding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Hair taken near the scalp can reveal a roughly 3-month period of alcohol and drug detection. Collection is easy, it's relatively tamper-proof, and it's straightforward to transport.

Providing a sample that's 1.5 inches long with around 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmatory tests. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a suggestion of 150mg is ideal. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. In instances where scalp hair isn't present, an equivalent portion of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. All other hair refers to body hair, like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four principal stages in processing a drug test result in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the inaugural handling of a sample into a lab's system. This process involves ensuring the sample's seal and shipment were correct, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any leftover data entry not covered by the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening refers to an initial, swift evaluation for drug substances. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen demands a confirmation for it to stand in court. Samples with presumptive positives during Screening require further confirmation.

Should Screening suggest a positive result, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this step, drugs are derived from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is more challenging to execute.

The Confirmation for any positive screen occurs using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a cleaning before Confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation measures.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests with a lesser detection duration.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It outlines a user's drug consumption over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent use: Drugs require 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result disparities: Elements such as hair color and person-to-person hair growth rates can impact the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
