Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle tests in Beulah, Alabama. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing ensures service provision nationwide. Hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches is typically needed from the crown or body. Testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or incorporate other customized analyses.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has risen in commonality. It's preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation services use hair tests for their extended detection period of up to 90 days, plus the challenge in tampering. However, urine tests are still favored for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of the developing hair. When harvested near the scalp, hair can provide nearly a 3-month detection horizon for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, and assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair denotes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The pivotal stages of laboratory processing for a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This encompasses verifying that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally valid. Any samples that suggest a positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample suggests positivity in the Screening period, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is regarded as the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All prima facie positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection scope.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus rendering the results more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: It can reveal a trend of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher expenses than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
