In Billingsley, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair tests, we provide solutions across all cities nationwide. For accurate results, ensure 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized testing.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method. Employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse professionals now favor these tests over urine tests for their zero-tolerance policies. The primary advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days. Hair testing nearly eliminates cheating, though urine tests remain superior for drug use detection within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extensive historical record of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair offers around a 90-day detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels above 10, a 150mg sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advised. If head hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we refer only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This process entails confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples that register as presumptively positive during Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for further preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, the drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory workflow, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Delivers historical insight: Offers a usage pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests", the testing is conducted on the hair shaft, not the underneath follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Billingsley, AL Unlike traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing offers superior detection and reliability. While urine tests detect recent drug use, hair tests provide insights into a 90-day history. This increased window enhances the detection accuracy and reduces the chance of manipulation, making it a clear winner.

Employers and legal bodies prefer hair tests for their comprehensive detection period and observation during sample collection. The challenge with urine tests is their limited window, while hair follicle tests offer a broader view of substance abuse.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Billingsley, AL The standout feature of hair follicle drug testing is its 90-day detection period. This extensive window allows employers to view a longer substance use history. This period gives a thorough insight, aiding in assessing an individual's substance habits over months rather than days.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
