In Booth, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you seek drug or alcohol testing via hair, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing services, operating in numerous cities across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is preferred for testing purposes. Hair analyses can trace drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Increasingly, drug testing now often involves hair follicle analysis. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists opt for hair drug testing over standard urine tests. This method is favored by entities with strict anti-drug agendas, courts, and probationers. A major advantage is a longer detection timeline, up to 90 days, with tests being nearly uncheatable due to observed collection and urine tests are best for very recent usage up to 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has been recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to nearly a 3-month window of detection for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

Approximately a 1.5-inch section comprising around 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be acquired. When mentioning head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. This involves confirming the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient means to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal validity. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Herein, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair rules and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug screening can indicate drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenges to falsify: Falsifying a hair drug test is considerably difficult, ensuring the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can display a pattern of drug use over time, not only recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings generally cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Booth, AL sees a preference for hair follicle testing over urine tests due to its superior detection capabilities. While traditional urine tests focus on recent drug exposure, hair follicle tests provide a more comprehensive view by uncovering drug usage up to 90 days prior. This method's efficacy ensures more reliable and trustworthy outcomes, strengthening the case for its adoption over urine-based testing mechanisms.

Extended Detection Window

The advantage of hair follicle testing in Booth, AL lies in its ability to reveal drug use history extending up to 90 days. This extended window provides employers with a detailed insight into the substance habits of candidates or staff, thereby aiding informed decision-making. Unlike other tests, the hair test offers a broader timeline, making it an invaluable tool for those overseeing workplace safety and policy compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
