Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Borden Springs, Alabama. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our specialization in hair testing is supported by centers nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific substances.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method, favored by zero-tolerance employers and courts, offers a greater detection period of up to 90 days. The collection process ensures integrity, making it difficult to manipulate, though urine tests remain accurate for usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has garnered a reputation as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can deliver up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. This method is easy to collect, less prone to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising around 200 strands of hair (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, deemed the optimal sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key phases in lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails an initial rapid check for substance use. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be validated to be permissible in court. Samples that test preliminarily positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample tests preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the starting specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing stands as the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can depict a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Borden Springs, AL, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing with its superior detection accuracy. Why choose hair tests? They uncover drug use over a longer period, offering reliability not seen in urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
