In Brewton, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, we operate testing centers in cities across the United States. Hair on the head or body, at least 1.5 to 2 inches in length, is usually required. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained popularity as a reliable method for drug testing. Whereas many employers and legal professionals previously depended on urine tests, hair tests are now often preferred. With a zero-tolerance policy, employers, courts, and probationary officers favor hair testing due to its extended detection period of around 90 days and minimal risk of manipulation. For recent drug use detection within five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and other drug use by retaining biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer up to an estimated 3-month detection period for substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A strand sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for both initial testing and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, additional evaluations, and/or testing exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. Head hair designates only scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome encompasses four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's framework. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry absent from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it is economical for ruling out drug presence in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample displays a presumptive positive in Screening, more hair is retrieved from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which renders hair drug screening as one of the most complex techniques.

Confirmation for any positive screen outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as needed. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditations aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection timeframe: Hair drug testing can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine testing has a briefer detection window.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It is particularly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, thus making outcomes more reliable.
  • Tracks past usage: It yields a usage pattern over time, rather than solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: Detection in hair takes roughly 5-7 days to manifest.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to alternate testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Diverse factors such as hair color and unique hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Even though termed as "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Brewton, AL: Hair testing offers advantages over traditional urine tests through superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis can pinpoint drug use over an extended timeframe, enhancing identification rates. This aspect makes it especially valuable for employers and institutions needing comprehensive drug use history instead of short-term snapshots.

Additionally, the robustness of hair tests reduces the risk of false negatives often associated with urine testing. By outmatching other testing methods, hair follicle testing becomes a preferred choice for workplaces committed to maintaining strict drug-free policies. The greater dependability of hair analysis underscores its effectiveness in providing superior protection against substance abuse in Brewton, AL.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Brewton, AL: One main advantage of hair follicle testing is its ability to uncover drug use over a longer period, typically up to 90 days. This extensive detection timeframe provides a deeper understanding of an individual's substance history, critical for employers seeking a complete assessment of employees or candidates. It informs satisfactory employment decisions and supports legal compliance.

The broad detection window is also beneficial for individuals working in sensitive environments, making hair follicle tests an ideal choice for workplaces in Brewton. By covering past behavior comprehensively, hair testing offers a reassurance level impossible with shorter detection options. Extended detection empowers employers to make insightful decisions based on thorough investigations.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
