Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bridgeport, Alabama. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair testing and provides facilities across all cities in the Nation for conducting these tests. Typically, hair on the crown of your head or from your body, measuring between 1.5 to 2 inches, can be used. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific hair testing.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests are increasingly becoming a preferred method in drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now often require hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are particularly favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and for individuals on probation. Their primary advantage includes an extended detection window for drug use, generally up to 90 days, accompanied by an observed collection process that is nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for assessing very recent drug use, within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment is acknowledged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a long-term history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to an estimated 3-month window of alcohol and drug use. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and conveniently shippable.

A 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred sample quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be taken. Reference to head hair strictly pertains to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The stages in laboratory handling of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the foundational processing of a specimen into a lab’s system. This entails confirming the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be permissible in legal settings. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are derived from hair at a far lower concentration than other testing mechanisms (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging to implement.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection window.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical data: It delivers a trend of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It generally takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle below the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests in Bridgeport, AL? Hair tests triumph in multiple areas such as detection accuracy and reliability. They uphold an extensive detection timeline, casting light on substance use spanning up to 90 days. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
